Audition for A Midsummer in late summer at BarnDoor's Full Circle Theatre

Perth's BarnDoor Productions will be holding open auditions on Sunday, April 17 beginning at 2:00 p.m. for the return of their summer Shakespeare series.  The popular series, which ran outdoors at the Perth Manor from 1996 to 2005, moves indoors to BDP's new Full Circle Theatre, as the community theatre gets their long-awaited space into full swing.

This summer's production will be A Midsummer Night's Dream, running July 28 to August 7.  The Dream was the third production of the original series and featured a magical backdrop of fairies, fountains and gardens.  It even opened on Midsummer's Eve!

The 2011 production takes a look at the play's darker side and sets its action against the rise of fascism in Europe in the 1930s.  Taking as its starting point Shakespeare's idea that political tension in the human world is caused by political tension in the fairy world, the play becomes a cautionary tale of power and ambition -- all too relevant in today's world!

There will still be lots of fairies, music and fun, but it will fairies with a difference, music with an attitude and fun with a twist.  Regular Shakespeare goers who have seen too many Midsummers will find something new and exciting in this one; non-Shakespeare goers may find something to change their minds. This will be BDP Producing Director David Jacklin's fifth Dream and he's looking to stage a Dream that is different, provocative and long-remembered.  BDP are confident that this one will be all of that.

The audition will be held outdoors on the grounds of the Full Circle Theatre, Sunday, April 17 at 2:00 p.m.  In the event of inclement weather, alternative arrangements will be made: simply come to the Full Circle building and direction will be given (not far).  This will be a round-robin audition, with no particular preparation needed.

There are roles for younger people (16 and up) as well as for adults, including a number of non-speaking roles who will nevertheless be kept very busy; "spear-carriers" will be given a new twist in this production.

The Full Circle Theatre is at 26 Craig Street (Highway 43, beside Last Duel Park) in Perth. Contact BDP at barndoorproductionstheatre@gmail.com or at 613 267 1884. Come and join in a Midsummer's Dream unlike any you've seen before.

BarnDoor announces auditions for summer Shakespeare

Gearing up for the planned mid-June opening of their new Full Circle Theatre, Perth's BarnDoor Productions has announced open auditions for the third production in the new space.

Set to run July 28 to August 7, William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream will revive the company's old tradition of summer Shakespeare, although staged indoors this time. Their 1998 production featured a magical atmosphere in the gardens of the Perth Manor but this one will take a darker turn, setting Shakespeare's fairies, lovers and mechanicals against a backdrop of the rise of Fascism in Europe in the 1930s.

There will be roles for younger people (16 and up) as well as for adults, including a number of non-speaking roles who will nevertheless be kept very busy.  Banish any thoughts of fairies flitting through flowers -- this production features jackboots and leather.

This will be BDP Producing Director David Jacklin's fifth Dream, including his first role in a "real" play, as Tom Snout, the tinker, at age 12.  With that in mind, he's looking to stage a Dream that is different, provocative and long-remembered.  BDP are confident that this one will be all of that.

The Full Circle Theatre is at 26 Craig Street (Highway 43, beside Last Duel Park) in Perth.
